VINTAGE NATIVE BALINESE CHILDREN PAINTING 1934
.(Vintage Book illustrations)
Balinese art has a style and a character of its own. The artists are numerous and profilic, distinguish by the aptience and efficiency of their craftmanship, and by their extremefaithfulness to an artistic tradition unlike westren artist, they seem to try to produce works conforming as nearly as possible to the aptterns used by their fellow-artists. Any individuality in the artist is bot stressed, as it is with Westrens , but rather contrary. If any works which show an unsual vision, a touch of originalilty, are produced , it would seem that they have come about through the agency of an artist’s particular gifts, nor by intention, but as it were in spite of his effort to make them alive like everyone else’s.(Belo.J.,1937)
The vintage native Balinese’s Children paintings age between 4 to 10 years old . They live in the undistinguished village of Sajan(District Gianjar), Bandjar Koetoeh which possesses neither a dalang nor a profesional painter, they are all boys has a father or elder brother whose bussiness it is to paint or to carve or to cut out in leather the Wayang puppet. ,
All the boys were the strict stylization of the forms, derivatrive form wayang tecchnique, the dramatic portrayal of demons, witches and mythological beasts , with gaping mouth aand glaring eye, the decisiveness of the line and the free and spontaneous recklesness of composition, combining uproatious action with a balanced , if rudimentery , sense of design.
During this time in Bali there is not “Mickey Mouse” but a score or more of figures familiar to the children- some brave, some fierce, some jolly, and some beautiful to behold. there are heroes and demos, horrifying enemies who burst out at one in dengereous situation. Thus the wyang provides the Balinese child with a whole gallery of puppets for the play of his own fantasy.
The Vintage Native Balinese Children paintings with divided to four groups :
Group 1. Wayang scene drawing .single or detailed with the names of wayangs.
Group 2.A Rendering of Real life : a mototr-car, the car is being ‘Stopeed’ by another wayang, a wayang pedanda (high priest0 is held by the beast, Batara di Loewoer (ancetor god) confronts Betara Soerja(the sun as a god)
Group 3. Human Figures and Scenes. Cheerfully draws “little brother’ with the crown of a hero.,Raksasa. The Battle motif, wheter of wayangs, beast, men, gods,or spirita, is the favorite amongst all children. The battle scene in which brandish stylistically drawn weapons, the air is filled with flying arrows, enemies transform themselves into strange beasts and heroes serpents or fierce birds of prey. Magic weapons with the Giant demon.
Group 4. Animals motif. Animals both domestic and imaginary ; the King fight of a Koeplak-Kaplik an evil spitit said to resemble a goat, but whose eare are so long that they make a sound ‘koeplak-kapli’ against the ground as he walks; a Battle between a mythological bird and a mythological lion, the bird,Garoeda(eagle),the Lion,Rahwana tarnsformed; a cow ridden by a man encountersa “Lejak” or a human being transformed into fiendish shape, with wild hair and long projecting teeth-in the center thechild of the cow, crying for its mother. A Tonja pops out of a tree while Ardjoena fight against Raksasa.
A Tonja appears in river, when an ordinary mas is taking hsi ducks to water; the Tonja steals a duck.scene I: The monkey prince Hanman comes to tell Bima that his little brother is lost.Bima weeps.Hanoman very angry, he flew through the air, but he didnot find him.Scane two : a follower of Rangda, the witch, hurls herself into the picture from one side, offering in her outstrached hand the head of Bima’s little brother which Rangda is about to devour. The stealing of a bride, Two men are lying dead, their weapons fallen beside them, one with his leg bitten off and above are the dogs showing their long-fanged jaws.

One of the best bali Artworks and handicraft were Paintings, the vintage paintings informations still not complete because no special serious study have amde because many vintage painting were broken or sold to foreigner collectors and they keep only for their own privatetly, some put in Museum abroad and in Bali Ubud painting museum, but thsi time forbidden to take photo and illustrated copyright. Before 1974 the bali museum and painters still gave permision to take the photo of their collections, some of the vintage photo of Bali vintage paintings were in my collections , the photo were took by permission from the owner and all of the owners were passed away now.
The rare Vintage bali paintings will illustrated in this blog, biside that also some from the vintage book illustrations (more than 50years ago). Please choose the best one to put in IMUCS cybermusuem.
I have only met the wife of the famous france expatriat painters La Meier Nji Polok (my profile with her), and the native painters Ida bagus made Poleng.
Ida Bagus made Poleng was the extentric native Painters because we cann’t asked him the design of the paintins also the size. he said I will paint what I like nobody could aske me. He also didn’t want to sold his painting (ill) because not finished with the frame, he said to me you cameback next year if you love that painting, because if you didn’t love it you will hanging in the front of Closet. very pity when my next visit (more than one years) he was passed away and the painting didn’t exist anymore. To complete the informations read the history of Bali Paintings below compile from many vintage books 1955 , including one Book Cover illustration painted black and white by the famous Bali Painters who still alive now : Ipe Maaruf and I have lithography of Lempad pantings (not illustrated because will used by trader for repro his sign and design to full the collectors)
